What Spirit Lives In You: Romans 8.9-11

In the book of Romans, the apostle Paul provides deep insights into the nature of the Christian faith, shedding light on the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8.9-11, in particular, unveils a profound truth about the indwelling of the Spirit in believers. Let us delve into these verses and discover the spirit that lives within us.

Romans 8.9-11, New American Standard Bible:
“However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

These verses encapsulate the essential truth of the Christian faith, emphasizing the indispensable role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. Paul distinguishes between living in the flesh and living in the Spirit, highlighting that those who belong to Christ are no longer governed by the fleshly desires and passions that once held them captive.

The presence of the Holy Spirit within believers is what sets them apart. The indwelling of the Spirit is a sign of belonging to God and being united with Christ. It is a transformative experience that leads to a new way of life. When the Holy Spirit takes up residence within us, we become partakers of the divine nature and recipients of God’s grace.

Paul further explains that although our bodies may be subject to the consequences of sin and physical death, our spirits come alive through righteousness. This righteousness is not our own, but the righteousness of Christ, imputed to us through faith. The Spirit of God brings life and vitality to our inner being, enabling us to walk in accordance with God’s will and experience the abundant life He has promised.

Moreover, Paul reminds us that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells within believers. This is an astounding truth that demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. Just as the Spirit raised Christ to life, He also imparts life to our mortal bodies. The Spirit brings transformation, not only in our inner selves but also in our physical existence, enabling us to live victoriously in the midst of a broken world.

Understanding the spirit that lives within us has profound implications for our identity and purpose as believers. We are no longer defined solely by our earthly nature, but rather by the Spirit of God residing within us. We are empowered to overcome sin, to live righteously, and to fulfill the purposes that God has ordained for our lives.

It is important to note that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not merely an abstract theological concept but a living reality. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but a person—God Himself. He guides, comforts, convicts, and empowers us on our journey of faith. He is the source of our strength, wisdom, and spiritual gifts.

In conclusion, Romans 8.9-11 reveals a profound reality for believers: we are no longer controlled by our earthly desires but are guided by the indwelling Spirit of God. This transformative presence empowers us to live in righteousness and walk according to God’s will. We are united with Christ, and the same Spirit that resurrected Him from the dead breathes life into our mortal bodies. This truth calls us to embrace our identity as children of God, walking in the power of the Holy Spirit, and fulfilling the purpose for which we were created. May we continually seek to cultivate a vibrant relationship with the Spirit, allowing His influence to shape every aspect of our lives. TheWholeArmourOfGod.com

Ephesians 1.1-14

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

To the saints who are at Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He set forth in Him, 10 regarding His plan of the fullness of the times, to bring all things together in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. 11 In Him we also have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things in accordance with the plan of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in the Christ would be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise, 14 who is a first installment of our inheritance, in regard to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. + (New American Standard Bible)

Revelation 3.10 NASB

Because you have kept My word of perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of the testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who live on the earth.

John 14.1-3 NASB

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many rooms; if that were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you also will be.

Luke 21.34-36 NASB

34 “But be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. 36 But stay alert at all times, praying that you will have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Titus 2.13 NASB

looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

1 Corinthians 15.51-52 NASB

51 Behold, I am telling you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18 NASB

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed the rest of mankind do, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, so also God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. 15 For we say this to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who remain, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
