The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a fundamental belief of Christianity. It is the event that sets Christianity apart from all other religions. In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 28, verses 1-8, we find an account of the resurrection that is both powerful and profound. Let us explore this passage in detail and understand its significance.

The passage begins by telling us that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb of Jesus. It is important to note that they were not expecting Jesus to be resurrected. They were simply going to see the tomb, possibly to pay their respects to their beloved teacher who had been crucified.

However, when they arrived at the tomb, they were greeted by a violent earthquake. This was no ordinary earthquake. It was a sign from God that something extraordinary was happening. The passage tells us that an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone that was blocking the entrance to the tomb.

The appearance of the angel was terrifying, and the guards at the tomb were so frightened that they fell to the ground. But the angel reassured the women, saying, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.”

The angel’s words must have been both confusing and exhilarating for the women. They had seen Jesus die on the cross, and now they were being told that He was alive. They must have been filled with joy and wonder at the thought that their teacher had risen from the dead.

The passage goes on to tell us that the women left the tomb quickly and with fear and great joy. They ran to tell the disciples what they had seen and heard. This is a crucial moment in the history of Christianity. The disciples had been devastated by the death of Jesus, and now they were being told that He was alive. This news would change their lives forever.

The passage ends with Jesus Himself appearing to the women on the road. He greets them and tells them not to be afraid. This is a powerful moment that demonstrates the reality of the resurrection. Jesus was not a spirit or a ghost. He was alive and present in the world.

The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. It is the event that gives us hope and assurance that we too will be raised from the dead. The resurrection shows us that death is not the end, but a gateway to eternal life. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, your faith also is in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15.14 NASB).

In conclusion, the account of the resurrection in Matthew 28:1-8 is a powerful and profound testimony to the reality of Jesus’ resurrection. It shows us that Jesus conquered death and is alive today. As Christians, we celebrate the resurrection every year on Resurrection Sunday, but we should remember its significance every day of our lives. The resurrection gives us hope, joy, and the assurance that we too will be raised from the dead.

Matthew_28.1-8 NASB

Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb. 2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone, and sat upon it. 3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 The guards shook from fear of him and became like dead men. 5 And the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to report to His disciples. New American Standard Bible
