The Beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

The Gospel of Mark is the first book of the New Testament, and it tells the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Mark begins by introducing Jesus as the Son of God, and he goes on to describe Jesus’ baptism, temptation, and public ministry. In this blog post, we will focus on the first 34 verses of Mark, which cover Jesus’ baptism, temptation, and calling of the first disciples.

Jesus’ Baptism

Mark 1.9-11 tells the story of Jesus’ baptism. Jesus traveled to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. John was a prophet who was preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. A voice from heaven said, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Jesus’ Temptation

After Jesus was baptized, he was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. Satan tempted Jesus with three things: food, power, and glory. Jesus resisted all of Satan’s temptations, and he emerged from the wilderness victorious.

The Calling of the First Disciples

After Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he returned to Galilee and began his public ministry. His first act of ministry was to call four fishermen to follow him. These fishermen were Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Jesus called them to be “fishers of men,” which means that he was calling them to share the good news of the kingdom of God with others.

The first 34 verses of Mark provide a brief overview of Jesus’ early ministry. We see that Jesus is the Son of God, that he has been empowered by the Holy Spirit, and that he is calling people to follow him. These verses are just a taste of what is to come in Mark’s gospel. As we continue to read Mark, we will see more of Jesus’ miracles, his teachings, and his death and resurrection. TheWholeArmourOfGod.org

Mark_1.1-34

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

2 just as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

“Behold, I am sending My messenger before You,
Who will prepare Your way;
3 The voice of one calling out in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
Make His paths straight!’”

4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6 John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. 7 And he was preaching, saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to bend down and untie the straps of His sandals. 8 I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon Him; 11 and a voice came from the heavens: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

12 And immediately the Spirit *brought Him out into the wilderness. 13 And He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving Him.

14 Now after John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

16 As He was going along the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will have you become fishers of people.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19 And going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and went away to follow Him.

21 They *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 And they were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do you have with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are: the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 After throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding region of Galilee.

29 And immediately after they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and they immediately *spoke to Jesus about her. 31 And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she served them.

32 Now when evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city had gathered at the door. 34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew who He was. 1 Thessalonians 4.13-18

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed the rest of mankind do, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, so also God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. 15 For we say this to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who remain, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
