The Whole Armour of God and the Wiles of the Devil

The Bible Verse by Verse – The Veil of the Temple – Matthew 27 – Brett Meador Video Only

Monday March 27th,
In the Year of Our Lord 2023.

Matthew 27.50-54 describes the death of Jesus on the cross and the events that occurred immediately following his death. This passage is significant because it highlights the power and authority of Jesus and the magnitude of his sacrifice.

First, we see that Jesus cries out with a loud voice and gives up his spirit. This signifies the moment of his death and is a fulfillment of prophecy (Psalm 31.5, Luke 23.46). Jesus willingly gave up his life for the salvation of all humanity, demonstrating his love and obedience to God.

Next, we see the veil of the temple torn in two from top to bottom. This veil separated the holy of holies from the rest of the temple, representing the barrier between God and humanity. The tearing of the veil symbolizes the removal of this barrier, allowing direct access to God through Jesus Christ. This tearing also signifies the end of the Old Covenant and the beginning of the New Covenant, in which salvation is offered to all through faith in Jesus (Hebrews 9.11-12).

The earthquake and the splitting of the rocks demonstrate the power of Jesus’ death and the magnitude of its impact. These events also point to the end times, when the earth will experience cataclysmic events before the return of Jesus (Matthew 24.7, Revelation 16.18-19). The opening of the tombs and the raising of the bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep are further evidence of the power of Jesus. This event foreshadows the resurrection of all believers at the end of time, when those who have died in Christ will rise again to eternal life (1 Corinthians 15.52).

The appearance of the resurrected saints to many in the holy city underscores the reality of Jesus’ resurrection and the power of his death. These events also point to the truth of the gospel and the hope of eternal life for believers. The resurrection of Jesus and the saints demonstrates that death is not the end, but rather a transition to eternal life in Christ.

Finally, we see the response of the centurion and those who were with him. They became extremely frightened and declared, “Truly this was the Son of God!” This response is significant because it represents a shift in perspective from unbelief to belief. The centurion, who had likely participated in the crucifixion of Jesus, now recognizes Jesus as the Son of God. This declaration is a testimony to the power of Jesus and the truth of his identity.

In conclusion, Matthew 27.50-54 is a powerful passage that highlights the significance of Jesus’ death and the impact it has on humanity. The tearing of the veil, the earthquake, the opening of the tombs, and the resurrection of the saints all point to the power and authority of Jesus. The response of the centurion and those with him demonstrates the transformative power of the gospel and the reality of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. As believers, we can find hope and assurance in the truth of Jesus’ death and resurrection and the promise of eternal life in him. Amen Dedicated2Jesus

Matthew 27. 50-54 NASB

And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. 51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now as for the centurion and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” New American Standard Bible
