Tug of War: Walking by the Spirit in Galatians 5.16-21
In the book of Galatians, the Apostle Paul writes to the Galatian church about the struggle between the desires of the flesh and the leading of the Holy Spirit. He reminds them that walking by the Spirit is the key to overcoming the desires of the flesh and living a life that is pleasing to God. In Galatians 5.16-21, Paul lays out the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit, highlighting the battle that every believer faces in their daily walk with God. Let’s explore this passage and see what insights we can gain from it.
Walking by the Spirit:
Paul starts by exhorting the Galatians to “walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5.16). This means living a life that is guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, given to believers as a helper, counselor, and guide. When we walk by the Spirit, we are submitting ourselves to the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit in our thoughts, actions, and attitudes. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are able to experience the abundant life that Jesus promised us (John 10.10).
Paul goes on to say that when we walk by the Spirit, we will not carry out the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5.16). The flesh represents our sinful nature, which is at war with the Spirit. The desires of the flesh are in direct opposition to the desires of the Spirit, and they constantly battle against each other. This is a spiritual tug of war that every believer experiences, as the flesh seeks to gratify its own selfish desires, while the Spirit seeks to lead us towards godliness and holiness.
The Deeds of the Flesh:
Paul then lists out the “deeds of the flesh” (Galatians 5.19-21) which are the sinful works that arise from following the desires of the flesh. These include sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and other similar sins. Paul warns the Galatians that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5.21). This serves as a sobering reminder of the serious consequences of yielding to the desires of the flesh and living a life marked by sinful behaviors.
The Fruit of the Spirit:
On the other hand, Paul presents the contrast to the works of the flesh by describing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5.22-23). The fruit of the Spirit is the result of walking by the Spirit and allowing His transforming work to take place in our lives. The fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These virtues reflect the character of God and are evidence of a life that is yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As we walk by the Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit becomes evident in our lives and helps us to live in a way that pleases God and blesses others.
The Battle and the Solution:
The battle between the desires of the flesh and the leading of the Spirit is a constant struggle that every believer faces. The flesh is always seeking to draw us away from God and towards sinful behaviors, while the Spirit is constantly guiding us towards godliness and holiness.

Galatians 5.16-21 NASB
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the desire of the flesh is against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, in order to keep you from doing whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, 20 idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
