The Whole Armour of God and the Wiles of the Devil

Friday April 21st,
In the Year of Our Lord 2023.

The second letter of Peter chapter 3, was written to address the concerns and issues that were prevalent in the Christian community during that time. In this chapter, Peter warns the believers about the scoffers who were questioning the second coming of Christ. He reminds them of the truth and the promises of God and encourages them to live a life that is pleasing to Him.

Verse 1-2: Reminder of the Holy Prophets and Commandments

Peter starts by reminding the believers about the importance of the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandments of the Lord and Savior spoken by the apostles. It is essential to understand that the Old Testament prophets spoke about the coming of the Messiah and His kingdom, and the New Testament apostles provided the teachings of Jesus Christ and His message of salvation. Peter emphasizes the importance of keeping these words in mind as a way of stirring up the sincere mind of the believers.

Verse 3-4: Warning of the Mockers

Peter then warns the believers that in the last days, there will be scoffers who will come and mock the idea of the second coming of Christ. These mockers will be driven by their own lusts and will question the promise of His return. They will say, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue just as they were from the beginning of creation.” In other words, they will argue that since everything seems to be the same, there is no evidence of Christ’s return.

Verse 5-7: The Ignorance of the Mockers

Peter points out that these scoffers are ignorant of the truth. They do not realize that the word of God created the heavens and the earth, and that the world was once destroyed by water during the time of Noah. They also do not realize that the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.

Verse 8-9: God’s Patience and Promise

Peter then reminds the believers that God’s sense of time is different from ours. With the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day. God is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient towards us, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. God’s desire is for everyone to have a chance to come to Him and be saved.

Verse 10: The Day of the Lord

Peter then warns the believers that the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will pass away with a roar, and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat. The earth and its works will be exposed and judged.

Verse 11-13: The Importance of Holy Conduct and Godliness

Peter encourages the believers to live a life that is Holy and Godly, especially since everything will be destroyed in the end. He asks them, “What sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and Godliness?” He urges them to look for and hasten the coming of the day of God, which will bring about the destruction of the heavens and earth by burning. But according to God’s promise, there will be new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Verse 14-18: Conclusion and Exhortation

Peter concludes by urging the believers to be diligent and spotless, blameless in the sight of God. He asks them to be at peace and to regard the patience of the Lord as salvation. He reminds them that the beloved brother Paul wrote about these things, which some may find hard to understand, but warns against being carried away by the error of unscrupulous people. He encourages them to grow in the grace and knowledge of God.

2 Peter 3 NASB

Beloved, this is now the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of a reminder, 2 to remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.

3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue just as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed by being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.

8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be discovered.

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found spotless and blameless by Him, at peace, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which there are some things that are hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unscrupulous people and lose your own firm commitment, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. New American Standard Bible

For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Revelation 3.10 NASB

Because you have kept My word of perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of the testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who live on the earth.

John 14.1-3 NASB

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many rooms; if that were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you also will be.

Luke 21.34-36 NASB

34 “But be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. 36 But stay alert at all times, praying that you will have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Titus 2.13 NASB

looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

1 Corinthians 15.51-52 NASB

51 Behold, I am telling you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18 NASB

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed the rest of mankind do, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, so also God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. 15 For we say this to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who remain, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.

Will You Accept Jesus Christ, As Your Lord and Savior Today
