As the world continues to face various challenges and uncertainties, many people are looking for answers and seeking to understand the events happening around them. In times like these, it is not uncommon for people to turn to their faith for guidance and insight. For Christians, the words of Jesus in Matthew 24.3-8 hold particular significance, as they address the questions of His disciples about the signs of His coming and the end of the age. In this blog post, we will explore the relevance of these verses in light of current events, including wars and rumors of wars, and the recent news of the U.S. sending a submarine to the Middle East.

In Matthew 24.3, Jesus is sitting on the Mount of Olives, and His disciples come to Him privately, asking Him to tell them when these things will happen and what will be the signs of His coming and the end of the age. In response, Jesus warns them in verse 4, “See to it that no one misleads you.” This caution from Jesus is relevant even today, as misinformation and deception abound in our modern world. It is crucial for Christians to be discerning and seek truth from reliable sources, including the Word of God, especially in times of uncertainty and crisis.

Jesus goes on to mention in verse 5 that many will come in His name, claiming to be the Christ, and they will mislead many. Throughout history, there have been false messiahs and self-proclaimed prophets who have led people astray with their teachings and false claims. In our present time, we must be vigilant and discerning to avoid falling into deception and being led astray by false teachings or leaders who do not align with the teachings of Jesus.

In verse 6, Jesus speaks of wars and rumors of wars. Wars and conflicts have been a recurring feature of human history, and our current times are no exception. News of conflicts and wars in various parts of the world are unfortunately common in today’s media. The recent news of the U.S. sending a submarine to the Middle East has raised concerns and sparked discussions about the potential implications and consequences of such actions. However, Jesus cautions in the latter part of verse 6, “See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.” While wars and conflicts are distressing, Jesus reminds His followers that they are part of the fallen world and must happen before the end times. It is essential to maintain a balanced perspective and not to be consumed by fear or panic, but rather to trust in God’s sovereignty and plan.

In verse 7, Jesus speaks of nation rising against nation and kingdom against kingdom, along with famines and earthquakes in various places. These events are often seen as signs of the end times, and throughout history, they have been observed in different forms and intensities. Famines, earthquakes, and other natural disasters can cause suffering and devastation to communities and nations. They also remind us of the fragility of human existence and the impermanence of the world we live in.

However, Jesus concludes in verse 8, “But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains.” The analogy of birth pains signifies that these events are part of a process leading to something new. Just as birth pains increase in frequency and intensity as a woman approaches childbirth, these events may intensify as we approach the end times. As Christians, we are called to be aware of the signs of the times, but also to trust in God’s ultimate plan and purpose.
